When I visit the Caribbean on a cruise, I usually want to visit a beach. The beaches in the Caribbean are my favorites, and there are some fantastic options. You’ll usually see beach breaks included in the official excursions. Want to do something within Cozumel but beyond the cruise port?

Solo cruisers may find that traveling on your own may not be much cheaper than an organized excursion, but a couple and, certainly, a group or a family will save quite some good money. Above all, you will be in charge of your own time and, as already mentioned, perfectly safe.

It arrived after a short time, with plenty of time for us to get back to the ship. I’d recommend planning this process a little early, just to make sure you make it. Guests visiting Mr. Sanchos should bring pool towels from their ship. With close to 5 million passengers per year the Cruise Port of Miami is the busiest in the World.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park

With its only fault being that it tends to get crowded especially when many cruise ships are docked at the island. This actually means you wont be docking at all, but you will tendering. This is also the pier of the ferry’s between Playa Del Carmen and the island. There are plenty of taxis here and you are within easy walking distance to shopping, restaurants and bars. The island lies 19 km / 12 miles in front of Playa del Carmen on the mainland.

Normally they hold the signs with tour names, so you can easily spot them. The Cozumel cruise port is one of the most popular ports in Mexico and for Caribbean cruises as a whole, welcoming over 3 million cruise passengers every year. All three of its cruise ship terminals are near San Miguel de Cozumel, the largest town on the island, making the Cozumel, Mexico cruise port conveniently located with various amenities within reach. When it comes to the closest beach to the Cozumel cruise port, it doesn’t get any closer than the beach at the El Cid hotel. The spot sits right on the edge of the International cruise terminal — just a few minutes walk out of the port area and you are there. It’s slightly farther from Puerta Maya (where Carnival ships dock), but still very walkable.

The Most Unique (and fun!) Things to Do in Cozumel, Mexico

Park Royal Beach is just a 5-minute walk from these two terminals and will require $40 per person to access since it’s part of a hotel. Outside the Terminal, after a humongous palapa, you will be on a wide road. To the right (south) there isn't much to see within walking distance unless you get in a taxi as all major beaches and beach clubs are located on the south coast. In front of the terminal, you’ll spot a spacious area featuring a large Margaritaville, usually filled with cheerful people dancing salsa, drinking tequila, or eating delicious Mexican food. There are plenty of tour booths, shops, several bars, and restaurants (Bar Mandy, Senor Frog’s, Bubba Gump Shrimp…) in this area. This is where you meet your tour operators when joining the shore excursions.

According to Quintana Roo state's statistics, in 2018 the island was visited by over 3,1 million cruise ship tourists (passengers and crew). Puerto Cozumel (locode MXCZM) is opposite Playa del Carmen and is the principal/main cruise port to Cancun - one of Mexico's most visited tourist destinations. Cancun is best known for the Mayan archaeological sites El Rey, El Meco, Coba, Muyil, Xcaret, Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibanche, Oxtankah, Tulum, Chacchoben, Chichen Itza. Cancun is approx 60 mi (100 km) from Cozumel (~2,5 hours drive distance) and is served by an International Airport linking via regularly scheduled flights to Canada, USA, Central and South America, Europe.

Chankanaab National Park is approx 5,5 mi (9 km) south of San Miguel. The park is open daily (between 7 am - 5 pm) and as amenities offers a lagoon, beach, restaurant, full-service bar, changing rooms, several walking trails. There you can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving, SeaTREK helmet diving, swimming with dolphins. This is an active farm surrounded by a mangrove lagoon and accessible only by boat.

This is where Carnival ships dock and most of their brands dock here, too. Create a combination of fun activities and resting by the waters at Buccano’s Beach Club on Playa San Juan. The beach is shady and the waters are calm here – perfect for swinging in a hammock and taking a swim in the sea. This piece of paradise is found in the hotel zone, just a short taxi ride from the port. Easy access in and out of the ocean via stairs across the rocky shore and the option to take guided tours make this a popular spot for cruise passengers who are “in the know” about where to go.

Nestled off the northeastern coast of Mexico’s state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is an island of cheerful people, salsa vibes, stunning nature, and rich Mayan cultural heritage. The port of Cozumel ranks among the largest and most visited ports in the Caribbean. You’ll be dropped off in the same area where you picked up your cab. If you leave enough time, you can do some shopping in the port or can go right back to the ship.

The site for the new terminal was in front of Marina Banco Playa (Puerto de Abrigo, island's northern coast). Port Cozumel also has a Ferry Pier located to the north of Punta Langosta. It serves the regularly scheduled ferry service between San Miguel de Cozumel and Playa del Carmen. Coco Cafe is a stylish new coffee shop another block or two north of Ernestos. Part of a successful restaurant group in Cozumel, Coco Cafe is the perfect place to start the day with a cup of good Mexican coffee and a selection of light pastries and sandwiches.

Punta Langosta Mall has all the usual Caribbean shops; Cariloha, Del Sol, Diamonds International, Colombian Emeralds. But don’t try to bargain too low – everyone has to earn a living. Since your cruise ship is stopping in Cozumel for only one day, you better make the most your time! Here are my picks for some of the  best things to do in Cozumel and what makes this tiny island so unique.
